Next door and located on the same hill there is an ancient farmhouse typical of rural Umbrian civilization. .

The manor house was purchased in the early 1900s by
Count Prof. Guido Bonarelli, illustrious world-renowned geologist, scholar and paleontologist, returning from his adventurous travels in distant lands.

A FASCINATING STORY

GUIDO BONARELLI

A PASSION FOR LIFE, A LIFE FOR SCIENCE

The history of Montereano is inextricably linked to the person of Guido Bonarelli.

A scholar of the early 1900s, he was a geologist, paleontologist, anthropologist,

Oil pioneer in Italy, Borneo, Argentina and Africa.

Guido Bonarelli

THE FIRST STUDIES

Guido was born in Ancona on 07/25/1871 to Count Giulio Bonarelli and Countess Giulia Salvadori and died in Rome on 01/11/1951.

As a young man he moved to Gubbio and as a boy he became passionate about finding fossils in this area. From 1890 he began to produce a series of scientific publications on the subject of ammonite fossils. He graduated very early and began an academic career first at the University of Perugia and then Turin.

PALEONTOLOGY

Between 1895 and 1900 Bonarelli published around 50 scientific works mainly on the paleontology and geology of the Umbria-Marche Apennines, he created detailed geological maps which remained a point of reference for decades.

His identification of the ammonite Collina Gemma dates back to this period

GEOLOGY

Also in the same period dates back to the discovery in the Bottaccione Gorge of a geological level characterized by a thin, black bituminous shale, present throughout the world but particularly visible in Gubbio, known in the scientific world as the "Bonarelli Level".(https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livello_Bonarelli), a sign of a disastrous anoxic event dating back 92 million years.

OIL PIONEER

He developed mining and oil research on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo, then in Argentina and Tierra del Fuego. In these territories he also developed his anthropological research. In 1926 he helped found AGIP in Italy. Bonarelli together with Porro was called to direct oil exploration until 1935
in our country.

98 reports date back to this period, most on Sicily and some on Tramutola in Basilicata, where he discovered the largest Italian oil field, whose potential he had already sensed in 1927.

Bonarelli House

THE RESIDENCE.
REST PLACE

In 1904, returning to his homeland with the proceeds of his work as an oil pioneer and scientist, Guido Bonarelli purchased some land in Gubbio in the Monteluiano area. “Montereano” , the name he himself wanted to give to that place, was for him an oasis of relief, refuge and refreshment; the ideal place for moments of rest after long and tiring journeys in distant lands.

The house was renovated in the 1920s with its current forms and then again between 2003 and 2010 with the most modern anti-seismic and modern living comfort criteria.
